WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

My name is Tabitha Britton-Porter, a candidate for re-election.

IN 250 WORDS OR LESS, PLEASE TELL US WHY YOU ARE SEEKING PUBLIC OFFICE?

I am seeking re-election because I have the experience, knowledge, education, and dedication for this position. I am the daughter of the Retired Justice Court Judge Ivory Britton and Mrs. Eliza Britton. I’m a graduate of Callaway High School and Jackson State University. I received my legal education through the Mississippi Judicial College School of Law. I have served on the bench and in the community for 7 1/2 years; that’s 2 terms in office. Now I am seeking a 3rd term because I know what it takes to be a good judge. My experience on the bench includes: Hearing civil and criminal cases such as landlord tenant cases, replevins, etc. and on the Criminal Court includes: DUI’s 1st and 2nd, domestic violence simple assault, misdemeanor fleeing, misdemeanor possession, etc. I am honored to also give 2nd chances when needed. Our 2nd chance programs include: Non-Adjudication for 1st time offenders that may have a DUI. I have sent people to counseling when there has been an issue with anger management and/or mental illness, and being able to get those individuals the help that they need. I have also sent individuals to rehabilitation for drug addiction, so that they can get the help they need. My service to the community includes giveaways that I have done on a daily basis. I have given more than 100 tons of food, clothes, household items, and during the water crisis I gave a pallet of water to Cade Courtyard, because they did not have water to drink nor flush their toilets. It is truly an honor to have my family and friends at the giveaways. We have served our family and friends of Edwards when they had the tornado to come through both times and just hosted a giveaway there on numerous occasions to show our love and support to the town. We also have traveled to Selma, AL, and Rolling Fork, MS, during the time of their tornados. I tell people all the time we were blessed and spared because that could have been my family and friends. I have hosted several back-to-school giveaways where I have given away school supplies, bikes, and books to read. I am honored to be the 2022 NAACP recipient of the Fannie Lou Hamer Award for Outstanding Community Service.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME

My name is Attorney Monique Montgomery.

IN 250 WORDS OR LESS, PLEASE TELL US WHY YOU ARE SEEKING PUBLIC OFFICE?

I am seeking public office to ensure that Hinds County has a Justice Court Judge that is fair and impartial. We also need a Justice Court Judge in District 2 that is experienced in Mississippi Civil Rules of Procedure, the Mississippi Rules of Evidence, and the general Rules of Law for our judiciary. Also, it is imperative that the Justice Court Judge know how to research the law, and also be capable offollowing the law as written by the state and federal lawmakers. The Judge should also apply the State Constitution and the U.S. Constitution.I have been practicing law for over 25 years.Hence, I am definitely capable of applying the various laws and statutes to the issues before the Court, by adhering to the rules, considering the facts and circumstances of the case to reach a plausible legal decision that is fair and impartial.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS/ARE THE GREATEST OBSTACLE(S) TO ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN HINDS COUNTY?

The greatest obstacle to economic and community development in Hinds County is the failure to implement leadership programs for county government and failure to develop team members that establish the common goal of advancement for the residence and the community.

IF ELECTED, WHAT STEPS WILL YOU TAKE TO MINIMIZE OR ELIMINATE THIS/THESE OBSTACLE(S)?

If elected, the necessary steps would include creating a handbook that outlines the procedures for Justice Court Judges.I believe the clerks would also benefit from an outline of procedures to ensure all citizens are treated fairly and to also prevent lawsuit against the county due to failure of following court policy and procedures.

I also believe that all compliance documents should be completed to ensure eligibility for Federal and State grants that could possibly afford the Court various government programs that will benefit the citizens that may face legal challenges in Hinds County.Such grants would include, but not be limited to:  Alternatives to incarceration for non-violent crimes, diversion programs for youth, technical assistance grants, project grants, curriculum adaptation and training grants, and strategic initiative grants that would assist victims of crime, provide training and technical assistance, and implement programs that improve the criminal and civil justice systems.
