On Jul. 6th, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones addressed the death of 18 year old detainee Mielun Butler during a news conference, describing the incident as “deeply troublesome” and confirming that a video circulating on social media shows the assault that occurred inside the Raymond Detention Center. Jones said Butler’s death is being investigated as a homicide and may have been an act of retaliation connected to the murder case for which Butler had recently been arrested. He also noted that investigators are examining whether gang activity played a role. The sheriff used the briefing to highlight ongoing challenges at the Raymond Detention Center, citing overcrowding, staffing shortages and long standing facility issues. Jones called on local, state and federal leaders to provide additional resources to improve safety and operations at the jail. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into Butler’s death, while the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal review. (Advocate Photos: Joshua Martin)
