Community Spotlight: Taste of the Caribbean adds more flavor to Downtown Jackson with new location
For nearly two decades, Taste of the Caribbean has been a staple for those seeking authentic island flavors in Jackson. Now, the beloved restaurant is turning a new page without losing its roots. With the grand opening of its new downtown location at 141 E. Capitol Street, Jackson, MS, Chef Richard Higgins and his partners are reintroducing Taste of the Caribbean with a refreshed vibe, expanded space, and renewed commitment to the city having supported them.
Located in the former Elite Restaurant building, a historic structure dating back to 1947, the new space represents both growth and continuity. After spending years in a smaller, takeout focused location, the move offers something for which customers have asked – room to sit, relax, and truly experience Caribbean culture beyond the plate.
“This is something different,” Higgins shared. “It’s a bigger location, a better atmosphere, and we love being downtown. We wanted to stay right here in the heart of Jackson.”
That difference is immediately felt. The new Taste of the Caribbean blends restaurant and lounge elements, creating an environment where guests can enjoy a full meal, sip a drink, and stay a while. With plans for live music, including jazz and blues, the space is designed to be an experience, not just a stop for food.
While the setting has evolved, the menu remains rooted in authenticity. Drawing inspiration straight from the islands, Higgins says customers travel from across the metro area and beyond to enjoy flavors they trust. Patrons know Taste of the Caribbean delivers food that’s true to its heritage.
The new location also expands accessibility with extended hours. Open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the week and until 1:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant caters to downtown’s nightlife crowd as well as daytime patrons.
At its core, the move is about community. “We love Jackson. We love downtown,” Higgins said. “We’re here to serve.”
With its upgraded space, lively atmosphere, and unwavering dedication to authentic Caribbean cuisine, Taste of the Caribbean’s new downtown chapter is poised to become a gathering place, bringing fresh energy to Capitol Street while honoring the journey that got it here.
