Wells Memorial United Methodist Church welcomes new pastor
JANS – Wells Memorial United Methodist Church has welcomed a new senior pastor to lead the congregation through the church’s 100th anniversary and beyond as they continue to provide a loving, caring, sharing ministry for church members, the surrounding Bailey Avenue community, and all who come.
Rev. Dr. Lewis E. Logan II delivered his first sermon as senior pastor on Sunday, July 12, and has since worked with members spending time determining where and how they envision Wells Church serving the congregation and community for the next 100 years.
Dr. Logan brings with him decades of experience at the pulpit. He surrendered to the call to preach at age 15 and has since led congregations in Georgia, California, and Mississippi.
Dr. Logan’s credentials include: a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Morehouse College; a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology; a Master of Theology from Emory University; and a Doctorate of Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminar in Decatur, GA.
In addition to pastoring, Dr. Logan has been successful in securing worker’s rights and encouraging peaceful understanding among gang members to help lower violence often experienced among rivals. His work for justice and equality has been recognized nationally. He also served as a public school teacher in Decatur.
Dr. Logan’s ministerial travels have been both international and national: Quebec, Vancouver, B.C., Ontario, Brussels, East Germany, West Germany, Singapore, Taipei, Chennai, India, Bermuda, and throughout each of the 50 United States.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Logan is the husband of Rev. Sharma Lewis-Logan, Bishop of the Mississippi United Methodist Church Conference. They have three children and two grandchildren.
Dr. Logan and the congregation of Wells Church invite all to attend worship services at 10 a.m. on Sundays at 2019 Bailey Ave., Jackson, MS 39213, and to participate in the many activities available to congregants and community members. The worship service is broadcast live on Facebook for those who cannot attend in person, and activity information is available on the church website at www.wellschurch.org.
