It has been five years since congressman and civil rights icon John Robert Lewis transitioned. However, his death date of July 17th has morphed into a clarion call for citizens of goodwill to continue to get into “good trouble, necessary trouble” as a way to create positive change in society.
In over 1,600 communities, loyalists came together to rally, march, organize, mobilize, and celebrate victories. Among the John Lewis National Day of Action, a small group with lots of determination gathered at Cornerstone MBC, 418 MLK Dr., Jackson, MS, to affirm that America is at a critical moment in history. “It’s more important than ever that we continue to show up and make Good Trouble,” advocated Terry Rogers, SGA president at Tougaloo College. The event was organized by Kathy Sykes, Helping Hands Outreach Services.
This year’s awardees were: Rev. P.J. Williams, New National Christian Leadership Movement, Atty. Alvin O. Chambliss, Councilman Kenneth I. Stokes, Hon. David L. Archie, Danyelle Holmes, Alice Thomas Tisdale, Clarence Douglas (LoveVets), Landon Stokes, Al Littell (Gulf Coast Veterans), MS Black Voters Matter, MS AFL-CIO, MS Immigrants Rights Alliance, Brenda Hyde and Rachel Mayes (Southern Echo), and Terry Rogers.
