Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. – MS State Conference concludes with leadership training, community impact, and charitable giving

JANS – The 76th Annual Mississippi State Leadership Conference of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. concluded this past weekend in the capital city of Jackson, marking yet another milestone in the fraternity’s longstanding commitment to leadership, scholarship, and service. Brothers from across the state gathered to engage in dynamic leadership training, professional development workshops, and impactful discussions aimed at strengthening the organization’s role in uplifting communities.

“This year’s conference was not just about developing leaders – it was about mobilizing them,” said Lorenzo L. Grimes, Mississippi State Director of Phi Beta Sigma. “Our fraternity has a long history of meeting challenges with action, and this weekend demonstrated that we remain dedicated to making a real difference.”

In addition to the robust training and strategic planning sessions, conference attendees took their mission beyond the meeting room and into the heart of the Jackson community. Phi Beta Sigma proudly hosted fundraising events around the city, raising critical funds in support of the Billy Brumfield Men’s Shelter, operated by Stewpot Community Services. The shelter provides essential services to homeless men, offering them a pathway toward stability and self-sufficiency.

“Our commitment to service is not just something we talk about – it’s something we live,” said Dir. Grimes. “By supporting Stewpot and the Billy Brumfield Men’s Shelter, we are reaffirming our fraternity’s purpose of being a force for good in underserved communities.”

As Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. celebrates 111 years of excellence, the Mississippi State Conference continues to serve as a powerful catalyst for progress. With renewed energy and a reinforced commitment to the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service, attendees departed with a shared vision for the future – one that ensures the work of Sigma remains impactful and enduring.

“As a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma, I know that great works our fraternity has done for Mississippi,” says Sen. John Horhn (MS-26). “Standing arm in arm with some many other great civic organizations, Sigma has helped to bridge gaps for under resourced communities and build upon our legacy of social action.”

“Locally, Sigma has supported Jacksonians during its toughest times, including COVID and the water crisis,” says Dr. Marcus Chanay, President of the Mu Sigma Chapter. “Our current charge for service includes working with our partners at Stewpot to help eradicate the barriers facing our unhoused and unsheltered citizens.”

“As men of service, we are called not only to lead but to uplift – to stand in the gap for the most needy and deserving, ensuring that our deeds reflect the principles we uphold,” says Rev. Dr. Stephen T. Cook, Senior Pastor at Anderson United Methodist Church. “Through our collective work, we embody the true spirit of brotherhood, leaving no one behind in our pursuit of justice, equity, and hope.”

“Fifty years of service is not just a milestone – it is a testament to a lifetime of dedication, leadership, and an unyielding commitment to the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service,” says Frm. Jackson Mayor and Councilman Charles Tillman. “As we pave the way for future generations, let us continue to be the guiding light in our communities, ensuring that our legacy endures for years to come.”
