NAACP Grenada Branch awards scholarships in honor of longtime civil rights leader Jasper Neely Jr.

JANS – The NAACP Grenada Branch awarded four $1,000 scholarships during its annual Freedom Fund Banquet on June 19.  The scholarships, which were awarded for the first time this year, are named in memory of Jasper Neely Jr., the longtime president of the Grenada Branch NAACP.

For more than 30 years, Neely dedicated his life to advancing civil rights, expanding educational opportunities, and empowering future generations. A trusted advisor to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Neely was widely respected for his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and community leadership.

The scholarships are funded through proceeds from the Grenada Branch NAACP’s annual Freedom Fund Banquet, the organization’s signature fundraising event. By establishing the Jasper Neely Scholarship, the branch is ensuring that Neely’s vision lives on through students whose academic pursuits and leadership potential reflect the values he championed throughout his lifetime.

“Naming our scholarship in honor of Jasper Neely ensures that his extraordinary legacy of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to educational opportunity will continue to inspire generations to come,” said Dr. Dominique Miller, president of the Grenada Branch NAACP. “These outstanding students embody the promise of our community. We are honored to invest in their education and look forward to the positive impact they will make as tomorrow’s leaders.”
