A musical tribute was held July 23, 2026, for the late Carroll Lee McLaughlin. Hundreds gathered at Cade Chapel Baptist Church in Jackson, MS to celebrate his incredible life. Memorial services followed July 24th. McLaughlin transitioned July 8, 2026, at the age of 37.
“Everyone in the music community feels the loss. It’s a big one. What an amazing talent! What a beautiful genius! What a humble spirit! Some folks just have it…naturally. Effortless. Wow. You touched many lives. May the music never end,” commented songstress Meredith Hairston.
Among McLaughlin’s many recognitions was taking home “The Jackie” for Musician of the Year at the 47th Annual Mississippi Gospel Music Awards.
Jackson Public Schools is also mourning the loss of a dedicated educator. McLaughlin’s passion for music left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Affectionately known by his scholars as Mr. Mac, he began his journey with Jackson Public Schools in 2018 as a music teacher at Bates Elementary School, where he inspired everyone through the joy and discipline of music. In 2023, he continued his service at Casey Elementary School, where he remained a valued member of the school community.
Through his teaching, McLaughlin nurtured creativity, built confidence, and enriched the lives of countless scholars. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his wife Ashley, their two children, other family members, church members, friends, scholars, colleagues, musicians, members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and the communities he served.
Reflections by Rev. Reginald Buckley, Pastor of Cade Chapel, still resonate with those who had deep connections with McLaughlin. “Not only did our congregation lose an amazing musician on our music team, we lost an amazing member of our family. Carroll came to Cade while still an undergraduate music major at JSU. When I first heard him play, I knew that he was special. My wife and I attended his senior piano recital and from then on we shared a special bond. I married he and his wife, dedicated his children, shared some meaningful life moments, and watched with joy as this young family grew in so many wonderful ways.
“I take confidence knowing that Carroll loved the Lord, served Him with joy, and now rests in His presence.”
