Madison junior golfer shines on Steph Curry’s UNDERRATED Tour
JANS – Kaylee Gatlin of Madison, MS, is spending her summer on Steph Curry’s UNDERRATED Golf Tour. Curry, a four-time NBA Cham-pion and two-time MVP, founded UNDERRATED Golf to provide equity, access, and opportunity to underrepresented student-athletes, aiming to increase the participation of competitive golfers from diverse backgrounds.
So far, the Tour has supported 30+ student-athletes in receiving college golf scholarships and helped one alumnus achieve their dream of becoming a professional golfer.
After winning the 2024 7A State Championship at just 15 years old, Kaylee is now ranked 6th overall in the state of Mississippi and 2nd in her graduating class. She hopes to qualify for the Curry Cup this fall and aspires to one day compete at the collegiate level.
When asked about her experience on the UNDERRATED Golf Tour, Kaylee wrote: “It represents opportunity, exposure, and a platform for athletes who may not always get the recognition they deserve.”
To learn more about Kaylee, the proud daughter of Spencer & Wanda Gatlin, the Jackson Advocate AllSports Zone (JAAZ) posed the following questions to the rising star:
JAAZ: What sparked your interest in being an athlete, particularly a golfer?
KAYLEE: I grew up playing basketball and volleyball, so I’ve always been competitive and involved in sports. I really started focusing on golf when COVID hit, and that’s when it became more than just something I did for fun. I was drawn to how every shot is on you – there’s no one else to rely on – so it really teaches discipline, patience, and accountability.
JAAZ: Have you been surprised by your success?
KAYLEE: I wouldn’t say surprised, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come. I’ve put in a lot of time and effort, so seeing results is rewarding. At the same time, it motivates me because I know I’m capable of even more.
JAAZ: Name three golfers or athletes you are inspired by.
KAYLEE: I’m inspired by Tiger Woods for his mentality and dominance, Amari Avery for her confidence and presence in the game, and Stephen Curry for how he changed his sport and carries himself on and off the court.
JAAZ: What does it feel like to be on the green?
KAYLEE: Being on the green is where everything slows down. It’s quiet, focused, and intense at the same time. Every detail matters, and it’s just you, your read, and your confidence in the stroke.
JAAZ: Do you see yourself competing as a pro golfer?
KAYLEE: Yes, that’s the goal. I want to keep developing my game, compete at the highest level, and see how far I can take it. I’m focused on the process right now, but I definitely see myself playing professionally in the future.
Tour stops include Gainesville FL, Scottsdale AZ, Galloway NJ, and Los Angeles CA where Kaylee and other talented student-athletes will have the opportunity to play at renowned golf courses across the country. This year’s Curry Cup moves to Bethpage Black Golf Course, September 15-17, 2026.
