JANS – Ramon Jackson, D.M.A, D.M.E., has been appointed to the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Advisory Board. Jackson, the assistant chair of the Department of Music, Jackson State University, joins a collaborative community supporting music educators and advocating for equitable access to music education.

“I’m elated to represent HBCUs and Jackson State University as a newly appointed board member of this organization and represent Jackson State University and people of color. Having the privilege to sit on this prestigious board and assist with pertinent initiatives for preservice music teachers to be afforded the opportunity to be ready for the K-12 classroom is truly a great honor,” Jackson said.

According to their strategic plan, NAfME is an association where all people are heard, seen, and feel they belong throughout their lifelong experiences in music. The organization assists with creating recommendations for the standards associated with music education, including learning objectives and lesson plans utilized by music educators nationwide.

Jackson is also an assistant professor of music education housed in the College of Liberal Arts. He says that this achievement is a testament to his career and the Department of Music’s efforts toward improving music education.

“I’m thrilled that the organization is making an effort to reach out directly to members of underrepresented communities and create opportunities for their development. Dr. Jackson’s appointment is a source of pride and acknowledgment of his hard work and dedication to music education,” said Lisa Beckley-Roberts, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Music. “I can’t wait to see all that Dr. Jackson and his colleagues will achieve through NAfME!”

Jackson is currently the president of the Mississippi Orff #100 Chapter, a board member of the Kodály Mississippi Chapter, serves on the Mississippi Department of Education Music Education Accreditation Board, and is president of the Jackson (MS) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

His appointment ends on June 30, 2026.
