Fast-pitch softball for youth in Mississippi’s capital city is alive and well, thanks to the continued financial support of the Hank Aaron Sports Academy.

On August 18, 2023, the Academy announced that its CEO Tim Bennett is stepping up again as the top sponsor of the Jackson Youth Softball Association (JYSA) by assisting and allowing its newest endeavor to thrive in Mississippi.

JYSA is a non-profit recreational organization that originated in Jackson, Mississippi, to engage inner-city youth in the sport of fast-pitch softball.

Daniel Johnson, JYSA director of operations, said: “We are engaging adolescents in the inner-city of Jackson, Mississippi, in an overall healthy, safe, and Christian environment through the sport of softball.  Our sport encourages staying fit and bringing communities together for fun and entertainment.”

Bennett explained, “It has been over 20 years since the inner-city youth of Jackson have had the opportunity to play in an organized competitive fast-pitch league. The Association is using this vast sports platform to introduce Christ, connect with communities, and increase participation among African American girls in the sport of softball. The sports program focuses on youth ages 5-17 in underserved and underrepresented Black and Brown communities. However, all are welcome, regardless of race, to participate as we desire to ensure equal opportunity for all.”

Bennett made the largest donation as a sponsor and contributor in the name of the Major League Legacy icon and Hall of Famer Henry “Hank” Aaron.

Bennett and the Hank Aaron Sports Academy made monetary commitments, but also provided practice and playing jerseys for all teams and their participants. Additionally, JYSA has been allowed to practice and play at no cost, utilizing the Academy’s facilities and playing fields.

Bennett stated: “I see the partnership between JYSA and the Hank Aaron Sports Academy as a two-way street that is beneficial for both organizations that is bringing back a sport that is inclusive of girls that is consistent with Hank Aaron’s mindset when he chose Jackson, Mississippi, as the home for the Sports Academy to benefit children, youth, and adults in underserved and underprivileged communities.”
