On Oct. 8th, U.S. Senate candidate and District Attorney Scott Colom announced a proposal aimed at addressing rising gas and diesel costs for Mississippians. Colom is calling for an immediate suspension of the federal gas tax and for temporary diesel relief measures to be made permanent. He says the proposals would provide relief to working families and businesses facing higher fuel expenses. The announcement, held at 5492 Watkins Drive in Jackson, included small business owner Arthur Peyton. Fuel costs have been a concern for industries that depend on transportation, including trucking and logging, as well as residents managing household expenses. Colom’s proposal is part of his campaign for the U.S. Senate, where he is tied with incumbent Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith in the November 3, 2026 election. (Advocate Photos: Joshua Martin)
