Cold Weather Shelter/Tips

(Jackson, Miss.) – The National Weather Service forecasts temperature lows in the mid 20s throughout the week with the possibility of wintry precipitation Thursday night and Friday of this week. In consideration of these conditions, the City of Jackson is making preparations and providing helpful weather-related tips for residents in need.

Temporary Shelter

The city in partnership with Shower Power will manage a temporary shelter at Shepard’s Gym at 1355 Hattiesburg St. (near Jim Hill High School). The shelter will be open to the public beginning today at 2:30 p.m. and will be open as long as needed.  The city will consider opening an additional shelter depending on turnout. Food and cots will be available.

City leaders also caution residents to stay home if possible in the event of wintry precipitation. Unlike Northern cities, Jackson and much of Mississippi is not equipped to deal with widespread freezing precipitation. These conditions can lead to a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain, which makes traveling on Jackson roadways perilous. Residents are advised to monitor National Weather Service forecasts and local media reports.

Smoke Detector Donations

Meanwhile, the Jackson Fire Department is advising residents to exercise caution during the cold snap by monitoring the use of electric space heaters and cooking activity.  The department currently has a coat donation drive to assist members of the homeless population. The department is also donating and installing smoke detectors for residents in need – as supplies last. Please call JFD at 601-960-1399 for details.

The City of Jackson will continue to update residents with any new information or changes to current plans. Stay safe!!
