On Jun. 9th, community leaders, attorneys, elected officials and supporters gathered at the Mississippi State Capitol to address the case of Marcus Taylor, who was recently granted clemency by Governor Tate Reeves after serving years under a sentence that exceeded the maximum penalty allowed by law. Speakers, including State Representative Fabian Nelson, attorney Malik Z. Shabazz and members of the Justice for Marcus Taylor Coalition, discussed efforts to secure compensation for Taylor and push for legislative reforms aimed at preventing similar injustices in the future. The coalition emphasized the need for accountability, justice and stronger safeguards within Mississippi’s legal system to ensure no one else loses years of their life due to an unlawful sentence.
