JANS – According to the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority (JMAA), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is in the process of installing new state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) scanners at the East and West checkpoints at Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport (JAN). These advanced scanners improve overall security screening while providing enhanced explosives detection capabilities.
The first two CT units were recently installed at JAN’s West checkpoint, with an additional unit beginning installed at the East checkpoint. These upgrades in technology offer TSA officers 3-D imaging of carry-on luggage that can be rotated and viewed from all angles, ensuring a more thorough analysis of bags. JAN is the first airport in Mississippi to implement this new high-tech machinery.
“TSA remains committed to installing technology that enhances security and improves the screening experience,” said Kim Jackson, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Mississippi. “This CT technology substantially improves our threat detection capability at the checkpoint.”
With the new Checkpoint equipment, passengers must place each of their carry-on bags, including purses, backpacks, and even full-size carry-on suitcases, into a bin. The tunnel opening of the CT units is slightly smaller than usual, so travelers are encouraged to ask TSA officers for assistance if needed.
Key Travel Information: Early Arrival Strongly Recommended
JMAA encourages passengers to arrive at JAN two to three hours before their scheduled flight to ensure enough time for parking, checking luggage, clearing security, and enjoying JAN’s concessions. During technology installation, wait times at TSA checkpoints may be slightly longer than usual. Passengers should confirm their flight status with the respective airline before traveling.

JAN offers convenient parking options, including:
• Economy Lot: $13 per day (with frequent nonstop shuttles)

JAN is served by the top four domestic airlines: American, Delta, United, and Southwest. JMAA greatly appreciates the support of federal partners at the FAA and TSA, who ensure that all JAN travelers are safe and moving efficiently to and from their flights. JMAA’s police department’s professionals are also on-site to enhance security.
