The Mississippi Central Labor Council statement on members of ATU Local 1208
Working People Stand with JTRAN Operators
The dedicated men and women who operate JTRAN buses are responsible for tens of
thousands of rides around Jackson every month. From getting us to doctors’ appointments and
work shifts to the grocery store and visits to family, members of Amalgamated Transit Union
(ATU) Local 1208 keep our city moving.
ATU members understand the importance of our bus system to working families, elderly riders,
and people with disabilities. JTRAN is more than just a way to get around. It’s a public service
and critical lifeline that so many people rely on.
Which is why their ongoing contract negotiation is a fight for a better transit system for all of
Jackson.
It’s deeply disappointing to see MV Transportation—the private company contracted to run our
taxpayer-funded buses—attempting to pit riders against workers. Executives argue that the only
way ATU members can get fair wages on par with other commercial drivers in the state is for
JTRAN to slash routes, eliminate Saturday operations, and cut working hours. This is just plain
wrong. Jackson residents shouldn’t be forced to choose between our buses and the well-being
of the workers who drive them.
MV Transportation is the largest privately-owned transportation company in America. We can’t
allow contractors to cry budget issues when they want to avoid paying hardworking
Mississippians what they’re owed. Our tax dollars and fare money should be going to retaining
drivers and expanding routes, not to padding the profits of this out-of-state company.
When ATU members voted to approve a strike, workers proved that they’re ready to stand up for
the services that our city relies on. A strike is serious business and the union doesn’t take this
action lightly. But by using their collective power, workers can fight for their own families and the
families that they serve every day.
The Mississippi Central Labor Council stands in solidarity with members of ATU Local 1208 in
their fight for a fair contract and will continue to advocate for a better JTRAN for everyone.
