Rust College celebrates 160th Commencement Weekend with distinguished guest Dr. Michael Eric Dyson
JANS – Rust College commemorated its historic 160th Commencement Weekend with a series of meaningful events honoring the Class of 2026, culminating in commencement exercises on Sunday, May 3, on the Grand Lawn.
The weekend’s highlight featured renowned scholar, author, and public intellectual Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, who delivered a powerful keynote address during the Commencement Exercises. His message challenged graduates to lead with purpose, engage with courage, and carry forward the enduring legacy of Rust College as they transition into their professional and civic lives.
Commencement Weekend activities began on Saturday, May 2, with the Senior Consecration Service held in Doxey Auditorium – an enduring Rust College tradition offering reflection, gratitude, and spiritual grounding as graduates prepared for this milestone.
Later that evening, the College hosted a special Lyceum Series event, “A Conversation with Dr. Michael Eric Dyson,” featuring Memphis media icon and distinguished Rust College alumna Bev Johnson as host. The engaging dialogue provided insight into Dr. Dyson’s perspectives on culture, leadership, and social responsibility, followed by a reception and book signing that allowed attendees to connect more personally with the speaker.
On Sunday morning, graduating seniors gathered for the Senior Breakfast, a celebratory moment of fellowship among classmates, faculty, and staff, marking the close of their undergraduate journey.
The weekend reached its pinnacle as the Class of 2026 processed onto the Grand Lawn for the 160th Commencement Exercises. In keeping with a cherished Rust College tradition, members of the 2001 Silver Class and the 1976 Golden Class also participated in the ceremony, proudly marching onto the stage to receive their commemorative Silver and Golden Diplomas – honoring 25 and 50 years since their graduation.
Surrounded by proud families, alumni, faculty, and friends, graduates experienced the long anticipated moment of crossing the stage – symbolizing years of perseverance, academic achievement, and personal growth.
Rust College’s 160th Commencement Weekend not only celebrated the accomplishments of its newest alumni but also paid tribute to the enduring legacy of its alumni across generations, reaffirming the institution’s mission to cultivate leaders grounded in excellence, service, and integrity.
