Jackson, MS Mayor

As Mayor, there is a special gratitude owed to those who build stronger communities. Reverend Cameron was one of those builders. He answered his calling at Greater Mount Calvary back in 1970 and poured himself into his church, into the neighborhood, and into the lives of people who needed hope, who needed guidance and love.

He opened the church doors to Jackson State University students, gave them a spiritual home, and treated them like family. He understood that if you cared for young people, you were caring for the future of Jackson.

He was a voice for civil rights, a steady presence in difficult times, and a leader who believed that faith and justice go hand in hand. Through his ministry, his service on boards and councils, and his work in the community, he reminded this city that faith is not only what we say on Sunday, it is what we do for one another all week long.

In recognition of his extraordinary life and legacy, and in gratitude on behalf of the people of this city, it was an honor to present a proclamation declaring December 13, 2025, as Reverend Dr. John E. Cameron Day in the City of Jackson.

Reverend Cameron’s work on this side may be finished, but his example will continue to guide us. May his family feel the love of this city, may his memory be a blessing and may his legacy continue to live through all of us who were touched by his ministry and his life. God bless you.
