When They Reject the Gift God Sent

One of the greatest challenges leaders face is learning not to take rejection personally.
Whether you’re a business owner, coach, pastor, entrepreneur, educator, consultant, or community leader, there will be times when you sincerely desire to help someone who simply isn’t ready to receive what you have to offer. It can be discouraging, especially when you know your intentions are genuine and your desire is to see others succeed.
Over the years, I’ve come to understand an important leadership principle: God may assign us to serve people, but He never removes their freedom to choose whether they will receive what He sends.
Throughout Scripture, God worked through people. He sent Moses to deliver Israel, Esther to influence a kingdom, the prophets to call nations to repentance, and the disciples to carry the Gospel throughout the world. Yet many rejected the very people God chose to help them.
Even Jesus experienced rejection.
John 1:11 tells us, “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.”
That truth reminds us that rejection is not always a reflection of the messenger. Sometimes people struggle with the message. Sometimes they resist change. Sometimes they expect God to answer their prayers in one way while He chooses another.
One of my favorite examples is Naaman in the Old Testament. He desperately wanted healing but nearly walked away from his miracle because he was offended by God’s method. The prophet instructed him to wash in the Jordan River seven times. It wasn’t the answer Naaman expected, and his pride almost caused him to miss his breakthrough.
How often does that happen today?
We pray for wisdom but ignore wise counsel.
We pray for growth but resist correction.
We pray for new opportunities but overlook the relationships God places in our path.
We pray for answers but reject the vessel God chooses to use.
As leaders, we must remember that our responsibility is obedience, not approval.
If God has called you to coach, continue coaching.
If He has called you to teach, continue teaching.
If He has called you to lead, continue leading.
If He has called you to build a business that serves others with excellence, continue building.
Don’t allow someone’s inability to recognize your value to cause you to question your assignment.
Instead, pray for them.
Pray that their hearts become open to receive whatever God desires to accomplish in their lives. Continue serving with humility, integrity, and excellence, trusting that God knows exactly who is prepared to receive what He has placed inside of you.
Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God knows the plans He has for His people, plans to prosper them and give them hope and a future. Sometimes He chooses to fulfill those plans through another person.
The question is not whether God is sending help.
The question is whether we are willing to receive it.
Likewise, if you are the one God is sending, don’t become discouraged when everyone doesn’t embrace your leadership, your business, your ministry, or your expertise.
Remain faithful.
Your success is not measured by the number of people who applaud you.
It is measured by your willingness to obey the One who called you.
When you stay faithful to your assignment, God will connect you with those who are ready to receive the gift He placed within you.
