When Fear Is Quietly Making the Decisions

By Dr. Kathy Amos

Fear does not always look like panic. Sometimes it sounds reasonable. It says, “Wait until you have more information,” when you already have enough to take the next step. It says, “What if it fails?” so often that you stop asking what might happen if you obey God. Fear can sit quietly beneath our plans, our prayers, and even our religious language. We may call it caution or patience without realizing how much authority we have given it over our decisions.

I began to see this more clearly while teaching The Anatomy of Fear. As I taught, I learned. I recognized that fear had influenced some of the things I repeatedly prayed about and prayed against. The prayers were sincere, but when God opened my eyes to what was driving them, I realized I had been wrestling with fear all along. Naming it changed how I responded. Instead of returning to the same anxious thought, I could examine it, bring it before God, and decide whether it deserved a place in my thinking.

This is an important question for anyone leading a business, serving in ministry, raising a family, or carrying responsibility for others. How many opportunities have we postponed because we were afraid of rejection? How many conversations have we avoided because we feared the response? How many assignments have we called “too soon” because we could not see how everything would work out? Wisdom may tell us to prepare, seek counsel, or wait. Fear also tells us to wait, but it often has no intention of letting us move.

Second Timothy 1:7 reminds us that God has given us power, love, and a sound mind rather than a spirit of fear. A sound mind helps us tell the difference between a concern that needs attention and an imagined outcome that is taking control. If a business decision requires more research, do the research. If a relationship requires an honest conversation, prepare for it. But when the only answer to every possible step is “What if something goes wrong?” it is time to ask whether fear has quietly taken the lead.

Some people describe fear with the familiar phrase “false evidence appearing real.” Yet not every concern is false, and faith does not require us to ignore facts. The deeper issue is what we do with the story our minds build around those facts. One unanswered phone call becomes “They will never support me.” One difficult meeting becomes “I am going to lose everything.” One unfamiliar assignment becomes “I am not capable.” Before long, we are responding to an imagined future as though it has already happened.

Scripture tells us to bring our thoughts into obedience to Christ. That means we can pause when a fearful thought appears and ask: What do I actually know? What am I assuming? What does God’s Word say? What wise step can I take today? Discernment catches the thought before it becomes a decision. Faith then gives us courage to act on what is true, even when we cannot control the outcome.

I want to encourage you this week to pay attention to the decisions you keep delaying and the prayers you keep repeating. Ask God to show you whether fear is underneath them. When you recognize what has been governing you, you can respond with clarity. You can pray, prepare, seek counsel, and move as God leads. Fear does not have to decide for you.
