Who’s Calling the Shots?
Be the Umpire of Your Peace

One of the greatest lessons the Lord has been teaching me recently is that not every urgency is my emergency.
As I reflected on my entrepreneurial journey, I realized many of the pressures I carried weren’t created by my calling. They were created by my fear of disappointing people. Like many leaders, I found myself responding to every request, every phone call, and every expectation because I believed that saying “yes” meant I was serving faithfully.
Then the Holy Spirit revealed something deeper.
My struggle wasn’t really about my schedule.
It was about my heart.
Colossians 3:15 says, “And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts…” (NLT). The word rule paints the picture of an umpire—the one who makes the final call.
That changed the way I lead.
Instead of asking, “What will people think if I don’t respond right now?” I began asking, “Do I have God’s peace about this?”
If the answer is no, then I don’t have my answer.
Jesus loved people deeply, but He was never controlled by people’s expectations. He served from obedience to the Father, not from guilt, pressure, or fear of disappointing others.
As marketplace leaders, we must do the same.
Our businesses, organizations, and ministries should be led by the Holy Spirit—not by urgency, people-pleasing, or the need for approval. Healthy leadership requires healthy boundaries, and those boundaries are often established by following the peace of Christ.
This week, before responding to your next “urgent” request, pause. Pray. Ask yourself one simple question:
“Do I have God’s peace about this?”
When Christ’s peace becomes the umpire of your heart, you’ll discover the freedom to say yes with confidence, no with grace, and wait with wisdom.
Your greatest leadership begins with the condition of your heart.
