Minnie Gloria Washington Hawkins
Minnie Gloria Washington Hawkins succumbed August 21, 2026. She was 93. Hawkins, AKA, Aunt Minnie, was the first of three children born to George and Rembert Washington in Summit, MS on March 2, 1935.
Aunt Minnie received her formal education at Cameron Street Elementary and High Schools, from where she graduated in 1952. She furthered her studies and received her Bachelor’s degree from Jackson State University in 1956, and later earned a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1971.
Her 40+ year career as an educator began in the school districts of Natchez-Adams County, Bolivar County and Madison County from 1956-1971. After completing her Master’s degree, she furthered her career in higher education at Alcorn State University from 1971 – 2000.
During her employment in the K-12 and higher education systems, Aunt Minnie developed curricula for the Early Childhood Program at Alcorn State University, served as a consultant for the Governor’s Council on Children, and a consultant for the Enhancement of Basic Test Scores, all while supervising and mentoring young and upcoming educators and conducting professional development workshops across the state.
Aunt Minnie served as a member of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional association for educators, the Mississippi Early Childhood Association, NAACP, the American Federation of Women, Alcorn State University National Alumni Association, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
She also loved animals, flowers and plants, cooking, and entertaining her friends and family, especially planning for Christmas with numerous trees throughout her home.
Aunt Minnie’s sister, Elect Lady Gloria L. Woodard, always said that she was a woman of strong faith which proved to be her life’s foundation. Upon its establishment, she became a physically and financially supportive member of the United Believers Teaching Center, which was later renamed The Ark of Safety Ministry, where she remained faithful.
Her active presence was one of the highlights of her sister Gloria’s children’s lives: Cheryl (Simon), Glen (Jacquelin), C. Rene’ (Andra), John (LaJesca), Adrienne (Baxter), Sylvia, and Jeremy.
Aunt Minnie was also survived by her brother George’s children: Ricky and Kaaren. His son Kevin preceded her in death. Her legacy also extends to a host of grand and great nieces and nephews, and a godson, Dr. Robert Moore.
