JANS – Dozens of Jackson Public Schools (JPS) scholars from across the district were recognized earlier this month during an Advanced Placement Awards Program at Murrah High School. The celebration shined a spotlight on 137 JPS scholars who earned a score of 3 or higher on their AP exams in spring 2025, on a scale of 1 to 5. It’s an accomplishment that earns them college credit.

Of the honorees, 46 were present for the ceremony, while many others have already graduated and taken their next steps in higher education.

The afternoon program blended celebration with inspiration. Guests were welcomed by the soulful sounds of the Murrah Jazz Combo before Murrah student Madison Cormack shared a heartfelt reflection on the AP journey. The program continued with encouraging words from Mississippi Representative Justis Gibbs, a proud Murrah graduate, who urged scholars to continue reaching for greater heights.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Anthony Moore, Executive Director of the JPS Office of Advanced Academics, expressed pride in both the scholars and the families who supported them along the way. “Our scholars have shown creativity, perseverance, and the determination to succeed,” Dr. Moore said. “Their achievements reflect not only their hard work, but also the unwavering encouragement of their parents, teachers, and school leaders.”

The Advanced Placement program, administered by the nonprofit College Board, gives JPS scholars an opportunity to take rigorous, college-level courses and exams. A strong performance not only demonstrates mastery of the material but can also save families thousands in tuition by providing college credit.

The event underscored JPS scholars’ determination to succeed and highlighted the community of teachers, families, and leaders who support them. More than an awards program, it was a celebration of potential, perseverance, and the future scholars are building.
