JANS – U.S. Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, Mississippi’s longest-serving Black elected official and Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, will keynote the Jackson City Branch NAACP 95th Annual Freedom Fund Awards and Scholarship Banquet on August 5, 2023, at 6 p.m. at the historic M.W. Stringer Masonic Lodge, located at 1072 J.R. Lynch Street in Jackson, MS.
“Just as Congressman Thompson has led the journey toward justice throughout his political career, the Jackson City NAACP Branch has stood at the forefront of past and current actions to empower our communities and fight against inequities and injustices,” said Nsombi Lambright-Haynes, Branch President. “From the water crisis to the state’s attempt at a takeover, the capital city has experienced its fair share of turbulence, and the Jackson City NAACP Branch has remained committed to the residents and to making democracy work.”
The annual banquet will also recognize trailblazers and freedom fighters who encompass the mission of the NAACP in their work to better the community as well as celebrate scholarship winners on their way to higher education. As the Jackson City NAACP’s primary fundraiser, the event supports programming, activism, outreach, voter education, and advocacy. Funds allow the branch to fulfill the NAACP’s mission to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination by addressing issues in our community related to education, equity, labor and economic disparities, voting rights, housing opportunity, access to health care, and environmental and criminal justice.
Banquet tickets are $65 and tables of 8 are $500. Sponsorship opportunities and souvenir booklet ads are also available. For more information, contact Banquet Chair Queen Hatfield at (601) 566-4300 or email jacksoncitynaacp@gmail.com.
