On Oct. 5th, Farish Street Green opened in Jackson’s historic Farish Street district, transforming three vacant lots between Amite Street and J.R. Meredith Drive into an urban forest and outdoor community event space. Created by 2C Mississippi in partnership with Communities of Shalom, Mississippi State University’s Jackson Community Design Center, and the Jackson Redevelopment Authority, the space includes approximately 100 new trees, shaded seating and a trellis-covered stage for community events and performances. The project grew out of heat-mapping work that identified Farish Street as one of Jackson’s hottest areas. Community members also helped shape the design through meetings beginning in 2023, providing input on trees, seating, shade, and the overall use of the space. Farish Street Green is now available for community events and is intended to provide a cooler, more welcoming gathering space while supporting activity in the historic district.
