On Aug. 11th, a segment of the I-20 Frontage Road in Jackson was officially renamed Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg Road, honoring the ninth Guru of the Sikh faith and his legacy of religious freedom and standing against religious persecution. The approximately one mile stretch of roadway, located between East McDowell Road and South Gallatin Street, was designated in honor of Guru Tegh Bahadur through legislation approved by the Mississippi Legislature. For Jackson’s Sikh community, the renaming represents recognition of the community’s presence and contributions while highlighting shared values of religious freedom, inclusion and respect. Mississippi Department of Transportation Central District Commissioner Willie Simmons also noted the significance of preserving Guru Tegh Bahadur’s legacy through the roadway designation.
