City of Meridian Mourns Tragic Loss of Civic Leader Fannie Johnson; One Suspect in Custody as Investigation Continues
MERIDIAN, MS — The City of Meridian is in profound mourning following the sudden and tragic death of former City Councilwoman and Executive Director of L.O.V.E.’s Kitchen, Fannie Johnson.
For over four decades, L.O.V.E.’s Kitchen has served as a sanctuary of hope and sustenance for Meridian residents in need. Ms. Johnson’s selfless leadership at the pantry, coupled with her dedicated service as a member of the Meridian, Mississippi City Council, left an indelible mark on the fabric of our community.
City leadership, law enforcement partners, and public safety officials are united in grief and firmly committed to ensuring justice for Ms. Johnson and her loved ones.
“Our entire city is heartbroken today,” said Mayor Percy Bland. “Fannie Johnson was the absolute heart of Meridian, Mississippi. A servant leader who spent her life lifting those who needed help the most. Whether advocating for her constituents at City Hall or making sure no neighbor went hungry at L.O.V.E.’s Kitchen, her impact was enormous, and her spirit was unbreakable. We join her family, the board, and volunteers at L.O.V.E.’s Kitchen, and our entire community in grieving this unimaginable loss.”
The Meridian Police Department, in close coordination with state and federal law enforcement partners, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding Ms. Johnson’s death.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Johnson’s family and everyone whose life she touched,” said Assistant Police Chief Dareall Thompson. “Our investigators have worked relentlessly since the incident occurred, and we currently have one suspect in custody. This remains an active, ongoing investigation alongside our partners at the ATF, and our team will not rest until full justice is served. Additional information will be shared with the public as it becomes appropriate to release.”
