Coins, care, and community: AKA chapter makes an impact in Jackson

JANS – Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Rho Lambda Omega Chapter is helping address everyday needs that can affect families and students in the Jackson community.

The chapter hosted Loads of Love Community Laundry Day on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Keyway SuperSudz Coin Laundry in Jackson. More than 95 patrons received free laundry detergent, fabric softener, dryer sheets, pillows, and other household essentials. The event also offered free health screenings, wellness information, educational resources, and voter registration.

Loads of Love began in 2025 when chapter members were asked to bring their spare change to monthly meetings. The money collected was used to purchase the laundry supplies and other items distributed during Loads of Love.

“The cost of keeping a family’s clothes clean can quickly add up,” said Dawn Magee, Chapter President. “This project gave us an opportunity to turn those coins into meaningful support and lighten the load for families in our community.”

The chapter also responded to a need affecting area students. After learning that some students were missing school because they lacked access to essential hygiene and personal care products, members took action. They collected more than 300 items for Callaway High School. By helping to remove a barrier to regular school attendance, this support allows students to fully focus on their education.

“Service is about recognizing and meeting a need. As AKAs we will always find a way or make a way,” said Magee. “Whether we are helping families with laundry expenses or supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities, our goal is impactful service.”

Through these and other initiatives, Rho Lambda Omega Chapter continues to advance Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated’s mission of “Supreme Service to All Mankind” throughout the Metro Jackson area.
