JANS – In a historic moment on October 14, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter celebrated the honorary renaming of Rose Street to Alpha Delta Zeta Drive at its chartering site, 723 Rose Street. The ceremony, hosted by Councilman Kenneth Stokes of Ward 3 and the City of Jackson, marked a significant milestone for the chapter and the community.

Dignitaries in attendance included city officials, members of the Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, other members of the Divine Nine, and community partners. Presiding over the event was Dr. Theresa Green, the Local Charter Day Chair, who led a program filled with pride and reflection on the chapter’s legacy.

The celebration commenced with a powerful meditation by Rev. Dr. Lisa Buchanan, setting a tone of excitement and appreciation for this momentous day. Councilman Stokes addressed the crowd with words of congratulations and then officially announced the renaming of the portion of Rose Street to Alpha Delta Zeta Drive.

Joining Councilman Stokes and Chapter President Judge E. Faye Peterson for the ribbon cutting ceremony were First Vice President Sonia O. Butler, along with past Chapter Presidents Dr. Theresa Green, Judge Patricia Wise, and Dr. Lucille Green. Together, they marked this historical moment for Alpha Delta Zeta, surrounded by chapter members who later honored their sorority’s legacy with the singing of their hymn, hands clasped in unity.

The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt benediction from Rev. Dr. Buchanan. To extend the celebration, chapter members gathered for a luncheon at a local restaurant in Jackson, marking the day with fellowship and reflection on the chapter’s achievements.

Judge Peterson expressed the chapter’s gratitude by stating, “Alpha Delta Zeta is grateful and appreciates this recognition from the City of Jackson. As the first chapter of Zeta Phi Beta in the State of Mississippi to have our 86 years of service to the city and the state honored in this way, this is a proud moment for all of Zeta. We cannot thank Councilman Stokes or the other members of the city council enough for leading the charge.”

Dr. Theresa Green added, “The Extraordinary Eight Charter members created this chapter in the wake of the Great Depression and during the height of Jim Crow. My heart leaps each time I think about what they had to do to sustain Alpha Delta Zeta. What an honor it is to be part of a chapter with such a rich history.”
