JFD’s Citizens’ Fire Academy hosts one-week community training sessions

JANS – Throughout the year, the Jackson Fire Department’s Citizens’ Fire Academy hosts one-week community training sessions to raise awareness of fire and emergency operations. “The Jackson Fire Department is committed to being a department at the forefront of fire and injury prevention,” commented Cleotha Sanders Jr., Deputy Fire Chief, Emergency Management, Public Information Officer, JFD.

Through the Citizens’ Fire Academy, the department encourages citizens to become more involved with fire safety. The overall goals of the program are to educate citizens about the basic tactics and strategies of firefighting and rescue operations, promote fire safety, and encourage participants to return to their families and neighborhood to share their knowledge and experiences.

“This will help citizens to be more safety conscious and informed,” says Sanders.

The Citizens’ Fire Academy goes all out to provide an enjoyable, interactive atmosphere in which firefighters and citizens can share information and concerns.

The latest class would agree that they had an educational experience they don’t intend on forgetting. Throughout the week, participants interacted with Jackson Fire Department Command Staff; learned basic first aid; the proper use of a fire extinguisher; toured fire stations; became familiar with fire equipment, fire vehicles, and their use; visited the public safety communications center; and had hands-on activities.
