On Oct. 21st, Operation Shoestring hosted its annual Conversation About Community event at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson, featuring author and economic policy expert Heather McGhee. McGhee joined Dr. Robert Luckett, civil rights historian and director of the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University, for a discussion centered on her book, The Sum of Us, and how its themes can inform conversations about equitable investment and opportunities for children and families in Jackson. The event also marked the launch of a book club initiative designed to bring together community members and stakeholders to explore the book’s themes, discuss personal experiences with equity and opportunity, and consider ways to strengthen investment in Jackson’s children and families.
