Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth I. Stokes held a press conference on August 8 for the purpose of suggesting that the Jackson Police Department (JPD) headquarters be renamed in honor of the late Hinds County Sheriff Lee Vance. Vance served as a police officer – and at a time he served as police chief – with JPD for three decades. Former Mayor Tony Yarber is also in support of the name change. Vance served as JPD police chief under his administration. In an ordinance by Councilman Stokes, he expressed, “It is in the best interest of the citizens of the City of Jackson that the immeasurable contributions of Chief/Sheriff Lee Dan Vance never be forgotten, and that the building in the City of Jackson dedicated to the housing of law enforcement offices and the administration of justice in the municipal courts be named in his honor.”
