The Official Royal House of Sori and MS communities unite for bold economic development initiative

By Daniel Foster

Special to the Jackson Advocate

The Official Royal House of Sori has launched a partnership with the Mississippi community, especially the cities of Jackson and Natchez, to promote economic growth, cultural enrichment, and social progress. This initiative was developed by The Official Royal House of Sori’s CEO HRH Princess Karen Brengettsy-Chatman, a descendant of Prince Abdulrahman Ibrahima Ibn Sori, a West African prince who came to Natchez centuries ago.

Born and raised in Natchez, Princess Karen aims to use the community’s heritage as a foundation for economic development. The initiative’s principles and objectives were announced during the Jefferson College May 10th annual Prince Abdulrahman Ibrahima Sori Da celebration.

A Comprehensive Approach to Economic Growth

The initiative includes a strategic framework to build a strong financial infrastructure for job creation, business restoration, and economic resilience. Key areas of focus are:

Job Creation and Workforce Development: Supporting entrepreneurship and career opportunities to provide financial stability for residents and attract new businesses.

Education and STEM Advancement: Expanding Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) opportunities to equip youth and adults with skills needed for the workforce.

Restoration and Revitalization: Restoring historic homes, movie theater(s), and local businesses to preserve cultural identity while creating economic hubs.

Cultural and Social Empowerment: Engaging the community to strengthen social and cultural ties.

A Community-Driven Effort

The Official Royal House of Sori is establishing an internal community network in both Jackson and Natchez to streamline initiatives, encourage collaboration, and involve residents in shaping their cities futures.

Acknowledgment of Community Leaders

The initiative recognizes leaders whose support has been instrumental, including John Spann, Mississippi Humanities Council; Ser Boxley, Forks in the Road; Joyce Arceneaux-Mathis, NAACP Natchez MS President; Jarita Frazier, Frazier Center; and Anniebell Varner-White, volunteer liaison for the Natchez Bright Star Agnes Thompson scholarship.

Princess Karen stated, “Together, we unite for the upward mobility of Natchez. Through shared vision and commitment, we will create lasting success.”

Next Steps and Community Involvement

The Official Royal House of Sori will roll out detailed action plans, community events, and engagement opportunities for residents and businesses to participate in the development process. Updates will be provided in the coming weeks. Aligning and fostering partnership aims to not only inspire economic development but also aims to honor the journey together we share, empowering the present and securing a thriving future for generations to come.
