The SWAC Championship is heating up, and so is thefriendly competition between two members of Congress. U.S. Representatives Bennie Thompson (MS-02) and Cleo Fields (LA-06) have placed a spirited wager as their alma maters, Jackson State University and Southern University, face off for the 2024 SWAC Championship title.

The prize? A delectable 25-pound feast of Mississippi Catfish or Louisiana Shrimp, depending on which school claims victory. For Thompson, a loyal Jackson State Tigers fan, and Fields, a proud supporter of the Southern University Jaguars, this rivalry is personal— and it runs deep.

The storied history between these two SWAC powerhouses has been one of passion, pride, and plenty of school spirit. Known for their electrifying bands, fervent fan bases, and rich traditions, Jackson State and Southern have long been the crown jewels of the conference. Both teams enter this year’s championship ranked No. 1 in their divisions, setting the stage for a clash that could go down to the wire. Jackson State has had the upper hand in recent years, boasting a five-game winning streak against Southern dating back to 2021. Under the leadership of Coach T.C. Taylor, the Tigers have proven to be a force on the field. But Southern, led by Coach Terrence Graves, is no stranger to the spotlight and is hungry to turn the tide.

This year’s championship returns to Jackson, where the Tigers and Jaguars will square off at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1:00 p.m. CT. The victor will not only claim the SWAC title but also earn a spot in the Cricket Celebration Bowl on Dec. 14 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where they’ll face MEAC champion South Carolina State.

As the excitement builds, Thompson and Fields are rallying their fellow Tigers and Jaguars to cheer louder than ever. With school pride and bragging rights on the line, this is more than just a game—it’s a battle of tradition, legacy, and community spirit. One thing is certain: whether it’s Mississippi Catfish or Louisiana Shrimp on the table, this rivalry will leave a lasting taste of SWAC excellence.
