Sixteen Years After Passage of Affordable Care Act, Cindy Hyde-Smith Has Made Mississippi’s Health Care Crisis Worse
March 23 marks the 16th anniversary of passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), landmark legislation that expanded health care access to millions of Americans
The ACA enabled ~340,000 Mississippians to access health coverage through the state marketplace — in one of the nation’s poorest and most medically underserved states
Since arriving in Washington, Cindy Hyde-Smith has voted repeatedly to undermine health care access for Mississippians
District Attorney Colom: “Since Cindy Hyde-Smith got to Washington, she’s voted to cut health care for 142,000 of our neighbors to give a tax cut to people already making $600,000 a year […] that’s a betrayal”

Columbus, MS — Sixteen years ago today, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) gave millions of Mississippians access to health coverage they’d never had. Today, that progress is being dismantled — and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith has had her hand on the wrecking ball since she arrived in Washington.
“Sixteen years ago, the ACA gave Mississippi families a lifeline. Since Cindy Hyde-Smith got to Washington, she’s voted to cut health care for 142,000 of our neighbors to give a tax cut to people already making $600,000 a year. Now eight of our rural hospitals are on the brink of closing, and families buying their own insurance are staring down a more than 300% premium increase. That’s a betrayal,” said District Attorney Colom in commemoration of the ACA’s anniversary.
Colom continued: “I’m running to lower costs for Mississippi families, save our hospitals, and bring real health care access home. Because Mississippi matters, and we deserve a Senator who acts like it.”
