Often a prospective participant in youth sports may find an opportunity to develop skills by taking part in summer camps. No matter the sport, these camps usually focus on involving children in new learning experiences with positive messages.

A newly formed Mississippi Sports League (MSL) has surfaced. It provides positive experiences for participants, resulting in both short term and long lasting character-building benefits.

From football, softball, basketball, and cheer, young girls and boys have opportunities to train and compete at beginner and advanced levels. The door is also open for adults to take part in league competitions.

Of course, these camps provide a foundation. An example is the recent MSL camp at Kurts Gym in Jackson.

On June 27-28, participants from ages 5-24 took part in basketball and cheer activities.

“We were really hoping to include softball, but inclement weather forced us to postpone that portion of our first camp,” said MSL Founder Renjah Brimage. “Despite those adjustments, we still managed to have an enjoyable and positive outcome.”

With the distribution of flyers, phone calls, and other forms of communication, 20 participants signed up for the first camp. Children participating in the basketball portion of the camp took part in dribbling, passing, and shooting drills. Choreography, dance, and group rehearsals were the activities for those engaged in cheer.

“We were really able to receive great feedback on the camp,” said Brimage. “As a result, we look forward to conducting a second camp with dates to be determined in upcoming weeks.”

Despite just getting the program off the ground, MSL is moving full speed ahead on making dreams a reality for all skill levels. This includes going beyond conducting camps and moving forward to competing on game-to-game basis.

According to Brimage, the best way to do this is to solicit football, basketball, softball, and cheer teams to become a part of the program. Competition will be formed through seasonal games and tournaments.

“We believe in fostering an environment of competitive spirit, teamwork, and growth,” Brimage said. “We offer a professionally managed league, with structured seasons, fair play, and a commitment to player development. For our football players, this means challenging competition, excellent officiating, and a platform to display their skills.”

While the overall mission of the MSL is to provide recreational sports across the state, the format and structure of the leagues will be based on level of participation with scheduling to be determined on an equitable competitive basis.
