On December 23, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court denied the Trump administration’s request to deploy the National Guard in Illinois

The ACLU is among those organizations working to stop the Trump administration from deploying military troops to patrol city streets in the USA. Hina Shamsi, Director of ACLU’s National Security Project, reports: “The ACLU has been sounding the alarm about these dangerous deployments from the very beginning.” The ACLU contends these deployments of National Guard and active-duty Marines are what the “founders of this country feared and rejected” and are “an intolerable threat to liberty”.
