Omega Psi Phi – Building stronger men and communities

Service isn’t something Howard Derrick simply schedules; it’s something he actually lives. As Health Initiative Chairman, Derrick and the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. believe in showing up, getting their hands dirty, and leaving the community better with each connection.
For the past decade, the Beta Alpha Chapter has hosted health initiatives featuring health resources, voter registration, blood drives, and a fatherhood initiative focused on encouraging men to become positive role models and responsible fathers. The chapter is also known for its annual community health fair at the Museum of Natural Science and a 5K walk supporting organizations such as the American Cancer Society and Alzheimer’s Association.
Guided by national mandates, the Beta Alpha Chapter prides itself on building partnerships throughout the city of Jackson. From keeping a section of Highway 49 North clean to growing organic vegetables for local families in their community garden, the brothers are dedicated to making a difference. Their reach also extends to two adopted schools – Johnson Elementary School and Lanier High School. The Omegas provide year round mentoring, educational opportunities, STEM programming, school supplies, free haircuts, and breakfast in recognition of Teacher Appreciation Day. They also give five $1,000 scholarships each to Lanier and Murrah high school students.
Derrick emphasized the importance of Jackson residents taking advantage of the available programs and free events. “We have other chapters of Omega Psi Phi in the state and nationally doing extraordinary things throughout their communities,” Derrick explained. For him, the goal is to see more families show up, participate, and take advantage of the many opportunities available to them. He regularly uses Facebook to keep the community informed and promote positivity surrounding Omega Psi Phi. While old stereotypes can linger, young men are seeing the true impact of fraternity leadership through hands-on service and mentorship.
The brotherhood applies that same dedication when pouring into themselves. On the first Tuesday of every month, the brothers celebrate members who have a birthday that month. Each year, they also honor their brothers who are 70 and older with a special celebration. “These men become your family over time. We can depend on one another during our most difficult times, and we celebrate one another during the good times,” said Derrick.
Every day, dedicated people are working behind the scenes to make Jackson a better place. While their efforts don’t always hit the evening news, the impact is felt across local classrooms, neighborhoods, churches, and community spaces. Ultimately, the Beta Alpha Chapter’s work reminds us of a simple truth: the most meaningful change happens when we simply show up and serve.
