NAUW makes history in Mississippi: Central Mississippi Branch officially chartered
JANS – On August 9, 2025, a historic milestone was reached at the Jackson Medical Mall as the National Association of University Women (NAUW) officially chartered its first-ever branch in the state of Mississippi. The newly formed Central Mississippi Branch welcomed 15 phenomenal women into its sisterhood, marking a powerful step forward in NAUW’s mission to advance equity through education, service, and sisterhood.
The chartering ceremony included the formal installation of officers and was honored by the presence of several distinguished national and sectional leaders. Among those attending were National President Betty W. Wilkerson, National First Vice President Annette Burtin, South Central Sectional Director Mary Gothe, and Leadership Academy Chair Dr. Debra Yarbrough. Their presence underscored the significance of this momentous occasion and the strength of NAUW’s leadership across the country.
In a special tribute, Jackson Mayor John Horhn issued a proclamation recognizing the importance of the event. Nic Lott delivered remarks on behalf of the Mayor. Jackson Ward 2 Councilwoman Montyne “Tina” Clay shared her pride in the Branch’s formation and its potential to positively impact the local community.
The Central Mississippi Branch also received heartfelt acknowledgments from several state elected officials. Dr. Courtney Jones spoke on behalf of State Representative Zakiya Summers. Senators Hillman Frazier, Sollie Norwood, and Angela Turner also extended their support, with Senator Turner speaking on behalf of the State Senate of Mississippi.
The charter members of the Central Mississippi Branch are Connate Williams, Blanche Adams, Kimberly Charisse Funchess, Carla Causey, Erica Reed, Erinn Monique Funches, Tamara Brocks, Kenitra Brown, Jessica Lewis, Jonesha M. Dixon, Alexandria Jenee’ Davis, Maggie B. Roberts, Carmen Washington, Arriannia Washington, and Erica Thompson. These trailblazing women represent a diverse array of talents, passions, and commitments to service, and they are now united under the banner of NAUW to make a lasting impact in their communities.
As the newest jewel in NAUW’s crown, the Central Mississippi Branch is poised to shine brightly in the South Central Section and beyond. With a foundation built on leadership, advocacy, and sisterhood, these women are ready to serve, inspire, and uplift. The journey begins now, and the future is full of promise.
