NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE AND URBAN LEAGUE TWIN CITIES CONDEMN KILLING BY ICE AGENTS, DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY
NEW YORK and MINNEAPOLIS (January 8, 2026) — National Urban League President & CEO Marc H. Morial and Urban League Twin Cities President & CEO Marquita Stephens issued the following joint statement in response to the recent killing of an American citizen by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents:
“The killing of American citizens by ICE agents cannot and will not be tolerated. For more than 50 years, law enforcement policy has explicitly prohibited shooting at moving vehicles—a principle established in 1972 and widely recognized as best practice. ICE agents’ decision to ignore this standard represents a dangerous and unacceptable escalation of force, rooted in outdated and reckless tactics.
“We call upon the appropriate federal authorities to immediately place the involved ICE agent on administrative leave, at a minimum, pending a full and transparent investigation. This is not only a matter of accountability but of reaffirming the rule of law and the consent of the governed over the belief that ‘might makes right.’
“The people of Minneapolis have demonstrated, through their response to the killing of George Floyd, that this community will not tolerate injustice. This latest act of violence is a stark reminder of the urgent need for reform and restraint in federal enforcement practices.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased and to the community disrupted by this tragedy. Together, we will continue to stand against aggression and work toward a future grounded in justice, dignity, and mutual respect.”
