MS Queens off to a great second season! Team nets staffers at the top of their game
JANS – The Mississippi Queens won’t take to the hard wood until later this summer but they’re hard at work preparing for Season 2! The team is an affiliate of the Women’s American Basketball Association (WABA) and is headquartered in Jackson, MS.
Team owner Tyre Brown of Pearl, MS kicked off Women’s History Month with the addition of two key staff members – Player Development Coach LaToya Thomas and Director of Operations Thelissa Norwood.
Thomas holds the top spot as the all-time leading scorer in Mississippi State University basketball history, encompassing both men’s and women’s programs, with a notable 2,981 career points. Her exceptional talent was showcased from 1999 to 2003, and she made history by becoming the first athlete from Mississippi to be selected as the No. 1 overall pick in a professional draft when she was taken by the Cleveland Rockers in the 2003 WNBA Draft.
Norwood hails from Florence, MS. The mother of three presently serves as the Sports Coordinator for the City of Richland, where her focus is on creating opportunities for youth and families through athletics. Additionally, she has spent eight years as the Assistant Basketball Coach at Florence High School. “My passion revolves around sports, community, mentally challenged individuals, and the development of young athletes both on and off the court, and I am thrilled to be part of the Mississippi Queens organization,” she said.
Also, Mississippi Queens’ Head Coach Ted Williams was recently honored at Springhill Christian Center for assisting over 1,000 athletes with scholarships and career opportunities in the WNBA.
Team tryouts are Saturday, March 14th from 1-3 p.m. at 125 Gymnasium Dr., Jackson, MS. For more info: 601-260-3717.
