Mrs. Gertrude Johnson honored on her 95th birthday
JANS – On April 21, 2026, the Jackson City Council honored Mrs. Gertrude Johnson in celebration of her 95th birthday. The resolution was authored by Ward 6 Councilwoman Lashia Brown-Thomas and reads as follows:
WHEREAS Mrs. Gertrude Johnson, born April 9, 1931, in Jackson, celebrates the extraordinary milestone of 95 years of life, faith, and service, and throughout those years has been a cherished member of her family, church, and community; and
WHEREAS, through Gertrude’s union with Isaac Johnson, she is the proud matriarch of a loving family that includes seven children, seven grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, and she is widely known as a nurturing mother and grandmother who affectionately calls her grandchildren her “sweet darlings,” demonstrating the deep love and devotion she has always shown to her family; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson is a devoted member of Greater New Canney Creek Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully serves as a church mother, participates in Sunday School and the mission ministry, and lovingly gives communion each first Sunday to her son Sylvester and his family, reflecting her enduring faith and spiritual leadership; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson also participates in the church’s Adopt-A-School initiatives and is regarded as a living archive who proudly preserves and shares the history of her church, family, and community, using her gift of storytelling to pass down wisdom, memories, and encouragement to younger generations; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson is admired for her stylish hats and elegant attire, her warm smile, and her strong, loving hugs that leave a lasting impression on all who meet her, reflecting the kindness, grace, and hospitality that define her character; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson enjoys spending time with her family, including being chauffeured around town by her children and sharing meals together, moments that reflect the joy she finds in fellowship and togetherness; and
WHEREAS, through her faith, wisdom, compassion, diligence, and devotion to family and community, Mrs. Johnson exemplifies the virtues described in Proverbs 31:10–31 – a woman clothed with strength and dignity, whose life reflects kindness, generosity, wisdom, and service, and whose children and community rise to call her blessed.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Councilwoman Brown-Thomas, along with my Council colleagues, do hereby honor and celebrate Mrs. Gertrude Johnson on the occasion of her 95th birthday and commend her for the lasting impact she has made through her faith, her devotion to family, and her unwavering love for her church and community.
