Clarity Creates Alignment: Leading Through Misunderstanding
By Dr. Kathy Amos
Leadership will place you in moments where decisions must be made in real time—without warning, without full discussion, and without delay.
Recently, I encountered one of those moments.
An executive committee member attended a Board of Governors meeting without formal confirmation or authorization. No official communication had been released inviting her, yet she arrived prepared to participate.
As President, I had to make a decision on the spot.
With professionalism and care, I addressed the situation and explained that while we valued her role, this particular meeting required proper authorization for attendance. She understood and responded with grace.
However, what followed was heavier than the moment itself.
There was tension.
There was frustration.
And I found myself questioning whether I had done something wrong.
Later, I revisited the meeting notes and recordings. What I discovered brought clarity—there had been no communication granting access to that meeting. The issue was not misconduct, but miscommunication.
This experience reminded me of a powerful truth: misunderstanding thrives where clarity is absent.
The Bible teaches us in Proverbs 4:7 (NLT), “Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.” Wisdom requires us to pause, reflect, and seek understanding before forming conclusions.
I also remembered Isaiah 1:18 (NLT), “Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. That is an invitation to communicate, to reason together, and to bring resolution.
I chose to have a direct conversation. What could have created division instead led to accountability, an apology, and restored alignment. We also connected with the executive committee member to ensure clarity moving forward.
In leadership, the goal is not to avoid misunderstanding—it is to resolve it well.
There is hope beyond confusion.
There is clarity beyond assumption.
There is alignment beyond tension.
But it requires the courage to communicate, the humility to listen, and the discipline to lead with both truth and grace.
If you find yourself in a moment of uncertainty this week, don’t rush to judgment. Seek understanding. Choose clarity. Pursue peace.
And if you need a space to reflect, reset, and reconnect, I invite you to visit The Gathering Place Chapel, 414 S. State St., Ste. 201, Jackson, MS 39201. You may also text 601-594-2330 to schedule a private time of prayer and self-reflection.
