MIRA and Allies Condemn Shooting in Minnesota
The Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance (MIRA) and allies condemns the killing of a U.S. citizen by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minnesota, calling it a disturbing example of unchecked federal enforcement that endangers communities nationwide, including in Mississippi.
MIRA said the incident raises serious concerns about ICE’s use-of-force policies and lack of accountability. Immigration enforcement is a civil matter and should never result in lethal force, the organization said.
“This killing confirms what many communities in Mississippi already fear—that aggressive and militarized enforcement puts everyone at risk,” MIRA said in a statement. “When federal agents act without oversight, public trust erodes and community safety suffers.”
Mississippi is home to thousands of mixed-status families and immigrant workers in industries such as agriculture, poultry processing, and construction. MIRA warned that incidents like this discourage residents from seeking medical care, reporting crimes, or contacting emergency services, making communities less safe.
The organization called for an independent investigation, the release of all body camera footage, accountability for those involved, and federal reforms for limit ICE’s use of force.
MIRA also urged Mississippi elected officials and allies to speak out and ensure state and local resources are not used to support enforcement practices that endanger residents’ lives.
