MDE names JPS principal Congressional District 2 Administrator of the Year
JANS – Callaway High School Principal Dr. Shemeka McClung has been named the 2025 Congressional District 2 Administrator of the Year by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE). This recognition also makes her one of four finalists for the Mississippi Administrator of the Year award.
The Mississippi Administrator of the Year program recognizes outstanding school administrators across the state and highlights leadership that positively impacts student success. Eligible candidates include elementary and secondary school principals as well as vocational-technical directors.
Dr. McClung has spent her career supporting student achievement and school improvement. She previously worked at Pearson Virtual Schools and Jackson State University (JSU) in leadership roles focused on academic growth, institutional research, and strategic planning. In the district, she has served as District Director for Student Support, Principal and Assistant Principal of Lanier High School, and a classroom teacher at Callaway, Lanier, and Wingfield high schools. She specializes in data analysis, instructional leadership, professional development, and student growth.
Dr. McClung’s personal philosophy is straightforward. She believes, “Every student has the right to a meaningful education, which requires addressing their holistic needs through continuous support and intervention.” If selected as the state Administrator of the Year, she will have an opportunity to share her expertise through presentations and other professional activities aimed at improving education statewide.
Dr. McClung holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology, along with a Master of Science in Teaching, an Education Specialist degree, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration & Leadership, all from JSU.
