TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Jackson State Tigers are (6-2, 4-1). After dominating FAMU 41-16 the Tigers continue showing why they are the team to beat in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The JSU Tigers were in a business-like mood scoring five times in the second half to go on and earn the second road victory of the season. Jackson State showed off football skills before an announced Bragg Memorial Stadium crowd of 13,104.
COACH TC TAYLOR TALKS JSU X’S AND O’S
“Those running backs are special. You talk about Ahmad Miller, he’s been running the ball with authority all year long for us, and that run he was able to break out right before half really gave us a great boost going into the half,” Jackson State Head Coach TC Taylor said. Donario Davenport is another big back with speed and size that can run the football well. Travis Terrell finished the game out with some great carries.
The Jackson State starting quarterback JaCobian Morgan did not dress for the road game at Florida A&M. Morgan sustained a lower leg injury in the Las Vegas HBCU Classic on October 25th. Jackson State dropped that game to Grambling State 26-24. Morgan was seen on the JSU sidelines with crutches and a walking boot in Tallahassee. At FAMU the Tigers used Jared Lockhart, a true freshman quarterback. Lockhart managed the game going 5 for 10, for 104 yards, and he completed a 42-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nate Rambert.
“I know what he’s capable of and I know he wasn’t playing his best football, but we got to be able to score touchdowns and that’s what I told him,” Coach Taylor said. “They came out and responded in the second half and I think ripped off 31 points in that second half.”
JACKSON STATE PLAYERS SHOW TEAMWORK
With the victory, Jackson State is in the driver’s seat to win the SWAC East. The Tigers have three more regular season games scheduled each Saturday this month. JSU student athletes have a gleam in their eyes as they continue to play the season out.
“It’s just the standard around here every week. We gotta keep going on and on every week. That’s the standard; that’s our philosophy; we have to keep going all the way to the end,” senior defensive back Levi Wyatt said.
“When you talk about Jerry Rice, Willie Totten up there they did some great things; it’s a lot of tradition to that program over there. On the flip side for us and Jackson State you know Robert Brazil and Walter Payton and all the great players have played in that game against each other,” Coach Taylor said.
JACKSON STATE AT MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE NEXT GAME
Jackson State will play Mississippi Valley State University at Rice-Totten Stadium on Saturday, November 8th at 2 p.m.
The JSU Tigers have played MVSU for decades as one of the most historic rivalries in the Magnolia State.
