A popular adage is, “Nowhere to go but up”. Tuesday’s Democratic primary election for Jackson mayor could have swapped “up” with “out” had it not been for the incumbent’s faithful supporters. Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba received enough votes, roughly 17%, to force an April 22 runoff with top vote getter, Senator John Horhn who commanded 48% of the vote.

Winners in the city council Democratic primary were Jasmine Barnes (Ward 1), Montyne “Tina” Clay (Ward 2), Kenneth I. Stokes (uncontested, Ward 3), Brian Grizzell (Ward 4), and Vernon Hartley (Ward 5). Both Ward 6 and 7 races will be decided in the runoff between Emon Thompson/Lashia Brown-Thomas and Kevin Parkinson/Quint Withers, respectively.
