Hinds County DA 2025 Annual Report
Last month, Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II held a press conference to present the 2025 Annual Report, highlighting the most active and results-driven year in recent history. The office conducted 70 jury trials, a 75% increase over 2024, the highest number in Mississippi state history. In addition to the historic trial volume, the report detailed high-impact prosecutions, strengthened trial outcomes, and a clear focus on violent crime and repeat offenders. It offers transparency into resource use and the impact of prosecutorial decisions on public safety in our community.
“The Office of the Hinds County District Attorney will continue to lead with integrity, protect our communities, and uphold the rule of law on behalf of the people they serve,” said DA Owens.
During the press conference, DA Owens addressed several major investigations and prosecutorial developments:
• JSU Jaylen Burns Case: The defendant has provided a confession, and the case remains a primary focus for the office’s investigative team.
• St. Patrick’s Day Shooter (2024): The District Attorney’s Office has secured an indictment against the second shooter involved in the 2024 St. Patrick’s Day shooting incident.
• Synagogue Arson Case: A suspect has confessed and been indicted in connection with the January 2026 arson attack on the Beth Israel Congregation synagogue in Jackson. Authorities are prosecuting this case, which has been investigated as a hate crime.
In addition, the District Attorney discussed ongoing and upcoming initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety, strengthening community engagement, and improving the efficiency of law enforcement efforts throughout the county. The press conference offered an opportunity for the public and media to gain critical insights into both the successes and challenges faced by the District Attorney’s Office in 2025, as well as to learn about future strategies for addressing crime.
