The Mississippi Gulf Coast has always held a special place in my heart. Its 26 miles of beaches and barrier islands – Cat, Horn, and Ship – offer a rare slice of paradise, accessible, affordable, and overflowing with natural beauty. A ferry ride to Ship Island transports visitors to turquoise waters and Fort Massachusetts, a brick fortress built after the War of 1812 and preserved within the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The Gulf Coast is more than a destination; it is a vibrant hub where nature, history, and culture converge.

This natural beauty pairs seamlessly with a lively cultural scene. Casinos and entertainment venues host legendary performers like Smokey Robinson, ZZ Top, and The O’Jays. It’s big-city entertainment without the big-city price – a unique blend of sun, sand, and soul.

Yet, for all its assets, the Gulf Coast has long faced barriers to connectivity. Limited transportation options have hindered economic growth, restricted access to essential services, and made commuting a daily challenge for thousands of residents.

That is changing. After years of planning and delays, Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Service officially launched on August 18, 2025, offering twice-daily service between New Orleans and Mobile, with stops in Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula. This is more than a scenic ride – it is a lifeline connecting communities, supporting economic growth, and improving health access. Reliable transportation opens doors for residents commuting to work, families visiting loved ones, patients seeking medical care, and travelers discovering the Gulf Coast’s unique culture.

Healthcare Access and Equity

Transportation is not only an economic issue – it is a public health issue. Many Gulf Coast residents travel long distances to receive specialized medical care. For patients facing heart surgery, cancer treatment, organ transplants, trauma care, or high-risk pregnancies, travel can be a barrier directly affecting outcomes. Affordable, reliable transit can change that.

Amtrak now connects residents to advanced medical centers in New Orleans and Mobile.

In New Orleans, Ochsner Health System provides cardiology, oncology, neurology, and transplant care; Tulane Medical Center offers cancer treatment, neurology, and high-risk obstetrics; and Children’s Hospital New Orleans delivers pediatric specialty care.

In Mobile, USA Health University Hospital covers trauma, cardiology, neurology, and cancer care; Springhill Medical Center provides orthopedics, cardiology, and surgical services; and Mobile Infirmary Medical Center performs complex cardiovascular and neurological procedures.

For residents without personal transportation or reliable options, the train represents more than convenience, it is a critical access point. Reliable transit can reduce missed appointments, improve treatment adherence, and enhance health outcomes, particularly for older adults, low-income families, and patients with chronic conditions. In this sense, transportation becomes a health equity tool, bridging gaps that have long affected vulnerable populations along the Gulf Coast.

Economic and Community Impact

The economic benefits are equally significant. The Pascagoula Shipyard, home to Ingalls Shipbuilding, is Mississippi’s largest private employer and a cornerstone of U.S. naval defense. For thousands of workers, commuting has been a barrier. Rail service offers a safer, faster, and more reliable way to reach work, while expanding the labor pool for one of the state’s most critical industries.

Local business restaurants, shops, and hotels along the rail corridor will also see more visitors exploring the region.

In a state historically challenged by limited economic opportunities, the return of Amtrak is more than infrastructure – it is a tool for community investment, job creation, and equitable growth.

Mobility as Opportunity

Transportation is empowerment. In my work in women’s health, I’ve seen firsthand how mobility can transform lives.

A single train ride can offer a path to safety, support, or a fresh start for someone trapped in an abusive or isolating situation. Reliable transit is not simply convenience – it is independence, opportunity, and improved health.

Looking Ahead

The return of Amtrak is more than a line on a map – it is a symbol of what Mississippi can achieve through investment in connection, equity, and opportunity. This train represents a lifeline to prosperity, health, and mobility, but it is only the beginning.

Continued investment in transportation and healthcare infrastructure is essential to ensure  every Mississippian has access to the resources they need to thrive.

By linking communities, supporting local economies, and improving access to care, we are building a Mississippi where mobility creates opportunity. Opportunity drives better health, stronger families, and vibrant communities.

Strategic investments like Amtrak’s return are about more than steel and tracks – they are about people, equity, and the promise of a healthier, more connected Gulf Coast. Mississippi’s future is moving forward, one train ride at a time.
