On Oct. 1st, Mississippians gathered in Jackson for a rally and press conference focused on fair representation and the state’s ongoing redistricting process. The gathering took place on the lawn near the Mississippi Supreme Court and Court of Appeals building on High Street, where participants assembled before marching toward the Mississippi State Capitol for the evening’s legislative redistricting hearing. Organizers and attendees called for maps that they say fairly represent Mississippi communities while raising concerns about mid decade redistricting. The rally came as lawmakers continued a series of public hearings across the state, giving residents an opportunity to speak about proposed changes to congressional, legislative and judicial district boundaries. These photos capture some of the moments leading up to the march to the Capitol, where residents continued to make their voices heard during the public hearing.
